Run your hand behind your Pomeranian's ears. All the way down to the skin.

Feel a small, hard, tight lump? That's a knot. And it pulls on the skin every time your dog turns its head.

Pomeranians have two coats, one on top of the other. On top, the long hair everyone strokes. Underneath, an undercoat as thick as wool that nobody sees. That's where it all happens.

An ordinary brush glides over the top. The dog looks flawless. Except that underneath, dead undercoat builds up, packs down and ends up as knots stuck to the skin: behind the ears, under the front legs, on the "trousers".

Nobody told you? That's normal. We learned it with Oswald and Yumi, our two Pomeranians.

What's in the kit

• The slicker brush. An 11 cm head bristling with fine steel pins that reach into the coat instead of gliding over it. Compact enough to get everywhere on a small dog.
• The dematting rake, size S. Steel blades mounted on an axis, 6.5 cm wide: the right size to work behind the ears and under the legs. It undoes knots and removes dead undercoat during shedding.
• The double-sided comb. The groomer's checking tool. Wide side to untangle, fine side to check: if it passes from the skin to the tips, there are no knots left.

All three tools have a solid wood handle with a walnut finish and stainless steel parts. They're made to last.

The routine: 10 minutes, twice a week

1. The brush, section by section. Lift the hair with one hand, brush the section underneath with the other, until you can see the skin. Then the next section.
2. The rake, only where it gets stuck. On a knot, or all over during shedding. Hold the base of the knot between your fingers so you don't pull on the skin.
3. The comb to check. It should glide through everywhere. Where it catches, go back over it.

What this kit won't do

It won't undo a coat that's already felted into mats. In that case, don't pull: take your dog to a groomer. The kit is there so it doesn't happen again.

And don't shave your Pomeranian to solve the problem. In some dogs, the coat grows back poorly, sometimes not at all.
